Welcome to the Town of Huntington
The heart and soul of Long Island
Founded over 350 years ago, the Town of Huntington sits in the middle of Long Island, a mere 40 miles from Manhattan. It’s a little different from its much more urban neighbor as it offers many parks, open green spaces, and a pace that’s a bit slower. Because it’s so close to NYC, the Town of Huntington is ideal for commuters or people who want to be near the action but not too close to it.
The Town of Huntington has five harbors and several bays and coves. There are nine beaches, which are perfect for locals and visitors who want to cool down on hot days. Spread out over about 93 square miles, the Town of Huntington consists of four incorporated villages as well as several unincorporated areas, including Melville, Dix Hills, Northport, Centerport, and East Northport.
What to Love

Local Lifestyle
The Town of Huntington is comprised of a variety of different people. Professionals like that it provides an easy commute into NYC. Families love its many things to do and excellent schools. It’s also considered a great place to retire.
Dining, Entertainment & Shopping
There is certainly no shortage of places to shop in the Town of Huntington, and Main Street is home to quite a few trendy and upscale stores, including
Mitchells. Here you’ll find designer clothing, jewelry, and accessories. If you’re in the mood for something a little older, you’ll want to visit
Rosie’s Vintage. There’s always something new here, including vinyl records, kitchen décor, and interesting odds and ends, mostly from the mid-1900s.
Sedoni Gallery is another fun spot, as it offers jewelry, art, and home furnishings.
You’ll have quite a few restaurants to pick from when it's time to eat. If noodles are your thing,
MB Ramen is a nice option. If you’re looking for something a little heartier – like a steak or burger – you’ll want to head to
The Bryant. And because it’s Long Island, you can’t miss out on a family-style Italian restaurant like
Maroni Cuisine. If you go, be sure to try Grandma’s meatballs.
If you’re up for taking in a show, see what’s happening at
The Paramount. Although only open since 2011, this venue has already become a big part of the nightlife in the Town of Huntington. The Paramount showcases some of the best entertainers in the world, including top-name comedians and musicians (local Billy Joel has performed there many times), as well as many sporting events. For a little more lowkey entertainment,
Industry Lounge & Gallery often has live music and comedy, and it’s also a place where you can grab a cocktail.
Things to Do
If you like nature, you’ll love what the Town of Huntington offers, especially
Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve. Comprised of over 1,600 acres of forests, meadows, and shorelines, you can easily spend a day hiking, biking, walking, or just sitting and enjoying the peace and tranquility.
Heckscher Park is another must-visit. Called the Central Park of Huntington, Heckscher Park has many hiking trails, playgrounds, and a picturesque pond. This park is also home to the
Heckscher Museum of Art, which has over 2,300 pieces of art by American and European artists.
One of the more notable people to come from the Town of Huntington is Walt Whitman, and you can visit the place of his birth. The
Walt Whitman Birthplace Association is a museum where you can learn about this poet and hear local poets read their work. If the idea of combining music and water excites you, you’ll want to attend
Music Fest, which is billed as “the only music festival in the world held on top of a working lighthouse in the middle of the water.” Another fun event takes place in September. For a couple of days, streets are shut down to cars for the
Cow Harbor Day Weekend. This starts with a 10K run, morphs into a concert, and ends with a parade and exciting boat races.
Schools
The students in the
Town of Huntington are served by eight school districts. Schools of note include:
