Suffolk County is the fourth-largest county in New York State, which encompasses most of the eastern part of Long Island and some smaller islands. First settled in the 1680s, it’s a place with a rich history.
With its proximity to New York City, Suffolk County has long been home to commuters who work in Manhattan but want to live in a more suburban setting. And because of its excellent schools and many things to do, families love living in eastern Long Island.

If you want to take in a show, you’ll have several opportunities in Suffolk County. The
Studio Theatre of Long Island has been performing top-tier productions for over 50 years. The
Argyle Theatre is another fabulous venue where you can see a Broadway-caliber show.
Things to Do
There are numerous attractions in Suffolk County, so there’s always something to do. If you or your family love sea life, the
Long Island Aquarium must be visited. In addition to all sorts of aquatic creatures (and the largest living coral displays in all of the Western Hemisphere), many mammals, reptiles, and insects exist. If you’re an art aficionado, the
Parrish Art Museum showcases several new exhibits throughout the year, as well as films, music, and lectures. The
Cradle of Aviation Museum is for people who love all things air and space. Here you’ll find displays of planes and spacecraft, along with interactive exhibits.
For a rustic day out, head over to
Harbes Family Farm. In addition to hayrides, farm animals, apple or pumpkin picking, and even pig races, you can pick up some extremely fresh fruits or veggies and some tasty cider donuts.
Because Suffolk County is on a peninsula, you’re never far away from a beach, and you’ll have plenty from which to pick.
Main Beach is a gorgeous spot to soak up some rays and swim in some very clear water.
Coopers Beach is another popular spot, especially for surfers. Plus, it offers a view of spectacular historic homes. Another notable spot to swim, surf, or just sunbathe is
Robert Moses State Park. You’ll also find many shops, scenic picnic areas, and an 18-hole pitch and putt golf course.
