Founded back in 1665, Smithtown is centrally located on Long Island. Considered one of the best places to live not only in New York but in the U.S., this is a quiet and peaceful community. It’s also ideally placed to take advantage of the Atlantic Ocean 30 miles away, as well as Manhattan, which is about an hour-and-half east.

 

One of the most desirable attributes of Smithtown – especially for NYC commuters – is that it has a stop on the Long Island Railroad. This also allows for easy access to other parts of the island.

If you’re looking to see a show, be sure to check the schedule at the Smithtown Performing Arts Center. Throughout the year, they put on several productions of well-known shows. If you love music, Katie’s of Smithtown is the place to be, as many local and traveling artists hit the stage several days per week. And if you want to show off your musical chops, Monday is open mic night. Napper Tandy’s is another joint that regularly showcases a variety of musicians.

 

Smithtown is a nature lover’s dream, as it contains dozens of parks. There are two in particular that locals and tourists alike enjoy. Caleb Smith State Park sits on more than 540 acres and includes many hiking trails and spots to fish. It’s especially good for birdwatchers, as a variety of different types of birds – including Ospreys and Virginia Rails – can be spotted there. This park also has a nature museum that offers information on the local habitats, as well as environmental education programs. Blydenburgh County Park is another spot you’ll want to visit. Here you’ll find over 625 acres filled with trials and opportunities to fish from the shore of the Nissequogue River or out on a boat.

 

You won’t want to miss the Smithtown Festival Day, which takes place every year in June. This is a very fun street fair with food, entertainment, and local artisans selling their wares.
